Meet Col. John R. Layton
Col. John Layton is the
rare person who has been lucky enough to full fill his
childhood
dream. Growing up in
Indianapolis, the young John Layton wanted nothing else but to
be a Deputy for the Marion County Sheriff's Department.
John's determination was
awarded in February 1974 when he was appointed to the Marion
County Sheriff Department working in the Wishard Memorial
hospital detention ward. John's high work ethic was noted
early in his career and was quickly promoted to a road Deputy,
allowing him to serve the public one on one.
John's people
skills and dedication to the county earned him a promotion to
the Detective division in Undercover Narcotics, Vice and later
to the Sexual and Physical abuse divisions.
After numerous
commendations for his quality work record and public service,
Sheriff Jack Cottey promoted John to Captain with the task of
establishing the new Regional Gang and Intelligence Unit
within the Marion County Sheriff department. The Gang and
Intelligence investigation unit forged new ground by melding
computer intelligence analysis and Street gang investigations.
The new investigative unit established ties with the FBI to
participate in the Safe Streets Task force.
Having recognized his
Creativity, Management ability and people skills, in 2003
Sheriff Frank Anderson elevated John to the rank of Colonel
and charged him with executing Sheriff Anderson's vision of
developing the Department as modern 21st Century Law
Enforcement Agency.
Colonel John R Layton
currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Marion
County Sheriff Department. He has not lost
the dream and enthusiasm of his youth to serve the public. He
continues to look forward to the daily challenges of bring
effective Law Enforcement to the citizens Marion County.
